Virtually everybody gets a stress headache once in a while, as we all have some stress to cope with. Tension headaches aren’t a big problem if they only occur on rare occasions.
But if you get them frequently, they can interfere with your daily life and cause a real problem. What happens then is that your stress headaches turn into an additional cause of even more stress, which you certainly don’t need. Your stress levels can keep going up this way. Stress headaches can be an ordeal, but if you keep the following tips in mind, you can start to relax more and begin to put an end to these headaches.
Immediately, when the headache hints that it is about to start, start relaxing each muscle in your body. When calming each muscle, always go in order, starting at your toes and working your way through your entire physical structure. To begin the relaxation process, tighten up each muscle individually, then let it go. This will help your body relax physically, which can also help alleviate any stress you might be feeling emotionally. On occasion, stress from physical movement can cause tension or stress headaches. Relaxing your body physically, using a relaxation technique, can keep the physical stress away, in turn, keeping the stress or tension headaches away as well.
Try some yoga. Other than keeping your body solid, yoga helps to calm you down and breathe deeply. Meditation is a significant practice of yoga. This is a good maneuver for identifying the areas of your life that are amplifying your stress levels and liberating destructive behaviors and increasing the constructive behaviors you take on. Furthermore, it can help you to release the stress you experience on a daily basis with the different parts of your life. At some point, this will help to reduce stress headaches. If you can keep your stress level at a minimum, you should be able to do the same with the headaches that often follow. You can help your body, both physically and emotionally, by doing yoga.
Sometimes you have to get away from other people. Stress and tension are caused by many things, but most of them involve other people. Even short periods spent alone can give you a needed break from people who may be making you feel stressed out.
It can be very relaxing to give yourself a respite from socializing and talking, and it’s best to stay off the phone, TV and computer during these times as well! Even if you can only get away for five minutes, this can have a rejuvenating effect on how you feel. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the stress headaches taper off when you give yourself permission to spend some time alone.
Chronic tension headaches are certainly no fun to deal with. If you’re getting headaches frequently, it’s a good idea to seek medical advice to rule out physical causes. If stress is the underlying cause of your headaches, you may need counseling to help you learn to deal with the underlying issues.
